I’ve been a big fan of Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia series ever since 2003’s Sands of Time, and while the series has had it’s ups and downs since then, I still get excited every time I hear a rumor about a new PoP game. We might have just gotten our first look at the next Prince of Persia game thanks to a leak on NeoGAF today, and despite my love of the series, I don’t know what to think of this supposedly new Prince of Persia:
The lone screenshot posted today is allegedly from a project entitled “Prince of Persia Zero,” which is apparently another reboot of the franchise. The screen apparently shows the new protagonist, who is very different from the agile and quick Princes of past games: the new “Prince” is clad in simple garments and sports an imposing muscle-bound physique. The way the people around him are dressed and the architectural style seem to suggest that the game takes place in ancient Egypt.
The team that created last generation’s Sands of Time “trilogy” has been busy working on Assassin’s Creed (which I also love,) for the last few years, and with AC3 apparently wrapping up the series’ main story arc, I’d like to see that talent get back to work on a new Prince of Persia. As exciting as the thought of a completely brand new PoP is, I still wish Ubisoft would make a sequel to the 2008 cel-shaded Prince of Persia — I understand it wasn’t exactly the most popular game in the series, but I personally really liked it, and would at least like to see some resolution to that game’s infamous cliffhanger ending.
Of course, “Prince of Persia Zero” is all just rumors and speculation at this point, so perhaps I’m over thinking it. Hopefully Ubisoft will give us some offical word soon regarding the possibility of future Prince of Persia titles.
