Today DC Comics announced the dramatically titled Injustice: Gods Among Us, a new 1 on 1 3D fighting game featuring iconic DC characters like Superman and Batman. As someone who has always preferred DC over Marvel, I’ve always wished for a DC fighting game that was as good as Marvel vs. Capcom or X-men vs. Street Fighter, and Injustice might just be that game. …Maybe.
Injustice: Gods Among Us is being developed by NetherRealm Studios, the same team of fighting game veterans that was behind the recent, surprisingly good Mortal Kombat reboot. While that alone should be enough to fill me with confidence that this new DC fighter is in good hands, NetherRealm also has a lot of people in it who worked on the mediocre Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe back in 2008.
Thankfully, from what NetherRealm has revealed so far, it seems like Injustice is going to be a much, much better game than MK vs. DC. The characters seem far truer to their comic book selves (you won’t see Superman getting slapped to death by Sonia Blade anymore, thank God,) and they all seemingly fight in a style that you would expect: Batman uses his gadgets and sneakiness to set up trap attacks, Wonderwoman can use her lasso of truth to stun enemies, and Superman even has a super attack where he pitches his opponents into orbit and then slams them back down into the Earth. Characters revealed to be on the roster so far are Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman, The Flash, Solomon Grundy, and Harley Quinn. NetherRealm is promising that Injustice will have as many playable characters as the last Mortal Kombat, and they’ll reveal more characters as the game nears it’s 2013 release date. I think characters like Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter are guaranteed picks, but I’m hoping NetherRealm includes a few of the more obscure (but still awesome) DC heroes and villains like The Question or Gentleman Ghost in the game.
Just as the characters fight the way comic book fans would expect them to, the environments they fight in will be just as iconic and interactive: a fight that begins on top of a Metropolis skyscraper will continue at street level if you uppercut your opponent off the edge, and stages like the Batcave will have traps and pitfalls that you can knock your opponent into. NetherRealm has also revealed that different characters will interact with the environment in different ways: Batman can slam his opponents into the grill of a car, for instance, while super strong characters like Superman or Wonderwoman can actually pick up that same car and use it as a weapon instead.
It’s hard to get over the disappointment that was Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe, but it looks like NetherRealm Studios is on the right track with Injustice. Here’s hoping they’re able to deliver on a game that will finally give us DC fans a fighter worth comparing to MvC. Injustice: Gods Among Us will be released for the PS3, Xbox 360, and the Wii U sometime in 2013.
