While Demon’s Souls takes pride in the brutal ways it kills its players, its servers just won’t seem to die. Atlus announced a few months ago that the game’s servers would be shut down on May 31st, but it appears that Demon’s Souls online functionality has been given another stay of execution.
While Atlus originally stated that it simply wasn’t financially feasible to keep the servers running any longer, apparently the game is still popular enough to warrant keeping it online. This is the second extension that the game’s servers have gotten, as the servers were originally scheduled to be shut down last October. Despite the release of the game’s much improved sequel, it appears that Demon’s Souls still has enough to a cult following to justify it’s continued online presence.
If you haven’t played Demon’s Souls yet, it’s still totally worth it — you can probably buy the game for less than 20 dollars at this point, and even if the servers do get shut down at some point, the game itself is still completely playable offline (though it’ll probably be much, much harder than it already is without the ability to see other players’ ghosts and messages.) If you’re looking for a hardcore action-RPG but don’t want to spend the extra few bucks to pick up Dark Souls, then Demon’s Souls is still definitely worth a try.
