It’s kind of weird that The Avengers was released this past weekend without any sort of licensed game tie-in: the movie has already set box office records and will probably go on to be the biggest film of the year, so you’d think videogame publishers would be lining up for the chance to cash-in on The Avengers craze. Well, while there wasn’t an Avengers game released in time for the premiere of the movie, apparently Ubisoft will announce a game starring Marvel’s A-team very soon.
While no official announcements have been made yet, Marvel recently registered a domain name for something called Avengers: Battle for Earth, and registration data for the site suggests that the domain is on an Ubisoft server.
I wouldn’t get your hopes up yet, though: while Avengers: Battle for Earth could be the console/PC action game that the movie (which is awesome, by the way,) deserves, there’s also an equally good chance that the title could refer to some quick Facebook or iOS cash-in that will in no way match the epicness that fans expect from an Avengers game.
Then again, even if it is a core-focused console title, there’s a good chance it could still suck; I mean, let’s face it, while superhero movies have been pretty good lately (well, other than Ghost Rider and Green Lantern,) superhero games are still generally pretty terrible. Sure, we have amazing games like Batman: Arkham City, but for every genuinely good title like that we get, there’s a bunch of terrible Iron Man or Green Lantern games to go along with it. With that said, I’m pretty happy to hear that the Avengers game is being made by Ubisoft — they’ve made a few good licensed games in the past (Peter Jackson’s King Kong, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) — so whatever the Avengers game ends up being, I’m pretty sure it’ll have more thought and effort put into it than say, most of Sega’s Marvel based games.
