Samsung 256GB 2.5-inch SSD 830 Series Review

Samsung 256GB 2.5-inch SSD 830 Series Review

Nick Hernandez 01 May

With a read speed of up to 520MB/s and a write speed of 400MB/s, Samsung’s 256GB Solid State Drive 830 Series (desktop) is a perfect desktop hard drive replacement. Weighing in at only 0.14 lbs with a thickness of 7mm it is a 2.5” SSD that is engineered to be compatible with most desktops on the market. The case is made of a brushed metal that blocks dust and corrosion. The entire package includes the SSD, a bracket, SATA cable, power cable and recommended software such as Norton Ghost 15 and SSD Magician 3.0 with user guides. In order to save power the 830 series uses 0.12W power consumption and maintains an operating temperature of 32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

The drive also comes with a limited three year warranty if ever any problems occur. With an 80K IOPS random read speed and 30K IPOS write speed, it maximizes performance wherever necessary. 256MB of DDR2 DRAM cache memory is also included in the drive. It is compatible with Windows (7, Vista and XP), MAC OSX and Linux operating systems. Inside this hard drive is a 3-Core Samsung MCX Controller, perfect of multi-tasking performance. All components of the SSD are 100-percent Samsung genuine as well.

Because of inconsistent benefits, the 830 series do not use data compression. Focusing on the user-friendly aspect of this product, the Norton Ghost 15 software allows data migration which enables the user to easily transfer files from their previous hard drive to the SSD. This also works even if the operating system is already on the old drive and has backup/recovery support. With this software the backup process is much more efficient and thus saving a lot of time.

Multi- tasking is also a big part of everyday computer users which was well thought out by the developers when assembling this reliable SSD. It is the ideal solution for your daily computer needs, such as browsing the web or viewing/editing multimedia files and even playing games. Having an SSD like Samsung’s 830 series enables you to boot up your computer in as little as 15 seconds and even improves your battery life by up to 30 minutes compared to a normal HDD(if used by a laptop). If you are in the market for a quick and reliable hard drive, you should be looking at the Samsung 830 series solid state drives.

As you can see from the benchmark tests on the Samsung SSD, The read and write speeds are not quite what Samsung claims them to be. The programs used to run these benchmark tests are AS SSD Benchmark and Crystal Disk Mark. As you can see from the results, they do not match the 520MB/s read speed and 400MB/s write speed Samsung has claimed. Running repeated tests between both programs returned consistently similar results. Though there may have been other factors which could effect the results but likely not by much. The speed of this hard drive averaged about 260MB/s read and 250MB/s write during the tests.

In comparison to a normal HDD, the Samsung 830 series SSD easily doubles in both read and write speeds. It is even shown in both 4K and 4K-64Thrd that the speeds of the SSD leave the HDD in the dust. These tests were run with the same benchmark software so there is no denying that a standard HDD doesn’t stand a chance against the superior SSD. Price wise, the SDD is much more expensive but it will do the job much quicker than your normal HDD. So if you have a desire for hard drive speed it is recommended that you purchase an SSD to replace your HDD.

You can head over to Amazon(link at end of article) if you are serious about having a performance SSD.
