Sure, Sega may be in a dire financial situation right now, but it doesn’t seem like they’re letting their cash flow problems get in the way of the business of making games (at least in Japan, anyway.) Sega recently filed several new trademarks in their home country, and one of them seems to hint that there’s a new Valkyria Chronicles game in the works.Sega filed trademarks for games entitled “Ryu Ga Gotoku Kizuna,” “Galaxy Conquest,” and most interesting of all, “Valkyria Duel.” Now, before you get too excited, it’s worth noting that Ryu Ga Gotoku Kizuna was already previously announced as an iPhone social game, so there’s a chance that the other 2 trademarks will also be social games of some kind, so “Valkyria Duel” might not be the Valkyria Chronicles sequel you may be hoping for.
It’s also worth noting that in light of Sega’s recent financial problems, there’s probably very little chance of this supposed new Valkyria Chronicles game hitting Western shores: Sega has already made it clear that their Western publishing output will be limited to guaranteed hits like Sonic and the Total War series for the time being. Sega already passed on publishing Valkyria Chronicles 3 in the US, though that probably had more to do with the PSP market being dead in America rather than due to the viability of the series to turn a profit.
As pessimistic as I am about this situation (or realistic?) I honestly hope that Sega is developing a proper, new entry in the Valkyria series. The original Valkyria Chronicles was the game that convinced me to buy a PS3, and I would kill to get a proper console sequel to it, especially considering how rare *good* strategy-RPG’s have become in this generation.
Also, yes, the header pic is in no way representative of Valkyria Chronicles’ actual gameplay, but it got you to click on the story, didn’t it?
