Notch working on a ‘Gorramn’ Firefly-like Space Trading Sim

Notch working on a ‘Gorramn’ Firefly-like Space Trading Sim

Dave Bast 26 Mar

Since asserting their global dominance with Minecraft, Notch and the team at Mojang have decided to set their sights on something bigger – the galaxy. So far there aren’t many details, but since Notch has said that the inspiration for the game is the cult hit Firefly, it sounds like they are starting in the right place. No word yet on whether or not player’s will be able to decorate their cockpit with fake toy dinosaurs, but there is still time.

According to PC Gamer, the game itself will be a reimagining of the 1984 space trading sim Elite combined with the personality and tone of Firefly. Unlike in Elite where players were actually the spaceship itself, Notch’s version will allow players to control a character inside of the ship itself. He’s hoping to convey the always rickety technology from Firefly into an open sandbox game. In lieu of just mindlessly traveling the galaxy, “I want to run around on my ship and have to put out a fire. Like, oh crap, the cooling system failed, I have to put out the fire here.”

Notch announced on his Twitter saying they have maybe come up with a name for their upcoming space trading game. They’re being a bit more cautious choosing a name this time, not wanting another Bethesda-like lawsuit to fly their way. Regardless of the name however, it is still a long ways away from player’s hands. Notch himself will begin working on it alone this summer, with more added to the team as the game begins to grow, much like how Minecraft was developed. Because they are using the same method, Notch expects to allow players to start playing the game as soon as it is functioning, “because it’s probably going to be open ended sandbox game as well, so it doesn’t need to be completed before people can play it” he told PC Gamer.

Well sign me up. I’d start playing right now if I could, but I’ll probably have to wait until Notch writes a few lines of code first. That or I can just go ahead and steal his idea, as Notch said, “If someone steals the idea before me, that’s totally fine. I just want to play that game.” To be honest, now I don’t even want anyone else to make it.
