In just under six hours, Double Fine has successfully collected over $300,000 for a publicly funded adventure game and documentary project with 2 Player Productions.
Dubbed the “Double Fine Adventure,” initial announcements on the company’s website stated how the developer planned to use Kickstarter, a service allowing public donors (i.e. fans) to contribute towards the project. The purpose of these endeavors? Prove the major publishers (because they know everything) wrong.
In the announcement, the introduction reads “Publishers tell us that adventure games are dead. Our fans tell us they aren’t. Who is right? Well, I think it’s about time we found out!”
Within the first two hours, donations soared to $100,000, which Tim Schafer — head of Double Fine — says is “higher than the budget of Monkey Island!”
Extremely impressive.
When donations hit the $300,000 mark, Schafer’s Twitter feed ignited with both excitement from himself and congratulatory fans.
“300! 300! 300! 300! 300! 300! 300! 300! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy!” Schafer said.
As for the publishers being wrong about the adventure genre and fans knowing best — looks like Double Fine was twice as right.

This is great news! I love anything that comes from the mind of Tim Shafer.
