Capcom has finally lifted the veil off of the next, true Resident Evil game, and it looks pretty amazing.
The first trailer for the game seems to confirm many of the rumors we’ve been hearing about Resident Evil 6: Series heroes Chris and Leon are both playable characters, and southern China seems to be one of the game’s central settings. What’s unexpected is the addition of a new, third playable character (apparently the guy in the trailer with the buzz-cut who mentions that everyone “needs his blood,”) as well as settings beyond China: apparently each of the characters is in a different location across the world (Leon in America, Chris in China, and the new guy in a separate city whose location hasn’t been revealed yet,) but Capcom is hinting that their paths will eventually cross and their separate story lines will all tie together. The trailer also seems to suggest that the enemies in the game will be a mix of the slower, more traditional zombies encountered in earlier RE games as well as some of the faster, more intelligent Ganados from Resident Evil 4 and 5.
Earlier rumors seemed to suggest that Ada and Jill would be key characters in RE6 as well, but they don’t seem to be in the trailer, though one of the characters both resembles and sounds like the President’s daughter from RE4, Ashley.
This trailer makes me happy because of two reasons: It seems like RE6 will refocus the series towards a story driven single-player mode, which is a big relief for me (and seemingly many other RE fans,) as I thought RE5’s decision to focus on co-op caused the franchise to take a step backwards in many aspects. Likewise, I’m glad Capcom has ignored all the fanboy haters who refuse to accept the changes (changes for the better, mind you) that the series went through with RE4 and they’re keeping that game’s focus on tense action.
Resident Evil 6 is scheduled to hit the PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 20th, 2012, and Capcom has already announced that exclusive DLC will be made available to those who preorder the game from either Gamestop, Amazon, or Best Buy.
