The San Francisco developer Three Rings Design has been snatched up by Sega. Three Rings Design are the creators of games such as Puzzle Pirates, and Spiral Knights. Sega’s choice of them is part of them making a more aggressive foothold into gaming like they once had in the 90s with the Master System and Genesis. Except this time, it’s with online gaming.
Haruki Satomi commented on how that the team behind the action MMO Spiral Knights showed not only talent, but uniqueness and individuality, which is what caught their eye in the first place. Three Rings Design being able to make very interesting and unique games, as well as equally unique worlds and settings is going to be a very strong part of Sega’s expansion into online gaming.
Three Rings will be working with one of the longest-standing publishers in gaming history who dared to butt heads with Nintendo, and release some of the greatest games of many childhoods. This news combined with Sega talking about bringing back a beloved franchise just recently shows that something big is going to go down with Sega, and it’s going to be a walking nuclear bomb.
Three Rings Design is currently working on an MMORPG based on the British sci-fi series Doctor Who.
