The original DS and Wii were notable for a variety of (good and bad) reasons, but one interesting statistic regarding those systems was that their respective user bases’ were evenly split between male and female gamers, a trait unique to those two systems. The 3DS hasn’t enjoyed the same popularity with women and like most other gaming systems, it’s users are almost entirely male. So if you were (misguidedly) hoping to use your 3DS’s Street Pass networking feature to hook up with some nerd girls, the odds are against you, my sad, lonely friend.
Nintendo is hoping to change all that by releasing a pink 3DS. Of course, they probably could’ve gotten female gamers’ attention with some good games with cross-gender appeal as they did on the original DS with games like Pokemon or Ouendan, but Nintendo made it pretty clear yesterday that their strategy for getting women to buy their products consists of one word and one word only: Pink… And no, I am not being cynical or a troll, Nintendo themselves made a big deal about how they think repainting the system in pink will cause women to rush out and buy their system.
The pink 3DS goes on sale in Japan this October, with a US release date to come as soon as a Nintendo execs can figure out how to get women into gaming without negatively effecting the amount of time it takes them to cook the rest of us dinner.

Tell me when they make a limited edition one based on the new My Little Pony series and the 3DS will be 20% cooler.
