Sony details the free PSN downloadable titles

Sony details the free PSN downloadable titles

Rian Quenlin 17 May

Sony promised they would give their gamers a selection of free games for when the PSN is back up, and so far they kept their promise quite well. The games are Dead Nation, inFAMOUS, LittleBigPlanet, Super Stardust HD, and Wipeout HD + Fury. Allow me to sum them up for you.

Dead Nation is a survival horror with a top-down view, similar to the PSX title Loaded. For a better comparison, it would be d20 Modern on the Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance engine. As the name implies, Dead Nation is a players vs zombies game that allows multiplayer, has very smooth gameplay, and extremely impressive lighting graphics. Reviews were mixed but they were usually leaning on the positive side. A run-and-gun style game basically.

inFAMOUS is a sci-fi game about Cole MacGrath, a man with supernatural lightning powers. The world is open and in a modern setting, using platforming, shooting, and puzzle aspects. His powers are used for virtually everything outside of running somewhere. The combat mechanics of the game are incredibly cinematic and allow you to execute very impressive attacks. The transitions from FMV to gameplay are perfectly seamless and just as awesome in both aspects. Something I’m personally considering getting sometime in the future.

LittleBigPlanet is already well known across the gaming community. Having extremely high ratings and a near-flawless reception for its massive amount of content and gameplay. It uses an extensive level editor and physics engine, meaning there is an unfathomable amount of player-generated content and near-infinite replayability. It plays in 2.5D throughout with 3 “layers” of gameplay and is a very impressive title.

Super Stardust HD is Asteroids on crack. You play a single ship on a planet being bombarded from all angles by meteors and enemy spacecraft. Your task is to obliterate those meteors and ships to prevent them from destroying the planet and yourself. Not much to say about it but it’s fun with some awesome music.

Wipeout can go without explanation for most people due to being a rather long-running racing series. You’re in a race with many other ships in a high-speed environment littered with a wide array of weapons, boosters, and hazards. An excellent competitive PvP racing game.

There are the five games for the PS3’s store given out for free in brief. Very well-chosen titles and all of them well worth playing.
