For the rest of us, some backstory. Planescape: Torment is a game that plays similar to Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale. The game is set largely in a planar city called Sigil, overseen by the mysterious and incredibly powerful Lady of Pain, and full to the brim with demons, devils, tieflings, and countless other planar denizens alike. It’s known for its extremely bizarre setting, unorthodox characters, and amazing storyline. It’s likely one of the best RPGs ever released for the PC, and very few games can match it in its sheer content and depth. The game itself revolving around an unkillable being known as Nameless One as the main protagonist, who wishes to find out his identity, or rather, his identities. Now, as I was saying…
When the CEO Feargus Urquhart was asked what games created by Obsidian he would like to return to for spinoffs, remakes, or sequels, he said in an interview “There are almost no games in my past that I wouldn’t want to go back and make a sequel to. It’s hard though.”, when further pressed on the possibility of a sequel to the classic Planescape: Torment, it was said straight up at the end of its production that Chris Avellone didn’t want to do a sequel. It wasn’t brought up again.
He did say however that he would have to think it through all the way, because a sequel would have to be done right because of the dedicated fanbase to Planescape, and doing it wrong would result in some rather furious fans of an excellent game. The odds of a sequel to Planescape: Torment is incredibly unlikely, but there is a small possibility that should be considered.
