The gaming console wars seem to be heating up quite fast in 2011! In estimates for the first half of 2010, it was quite clear that the PS3 was beating Microsoft’s Xbox 360 by a small margin. However, with newer figures released with the end of 2010, it has become quite clear that the PS3 platform has clearly outperformed the 360 by more than a million. Though there seem to be varying sources which quote different numbers, with one claiming the PS3 is ahead by a million whereas another quoted the PS3 as being ahead by as much as 2 million, there can be no doubt that 2010 clearly belonged to the PS3, though closely.
According to one source, the PS3 sold 14.4 million sets in 2010, whereas the 360 sold 13.6 million sets. By the other source, the numbers sit at 14.4 million and 12.1 million respectively. However, the overall lifetime sales of the two platforms puts the 360 at a slightly higher pedestal, having sold 50.9 million units as opposed to 47.9 million for the PS3.
2011 is gearing up to be an exciting year for both platforms; with PS3 having the opportunity to wipe out the 360’s overall lead with a strong performance. With a large line up of much awaited games scheduled to be released soon, it remains to be seen which platform can snap up a healthy quantity of exclusives and take the lead this year.
