Apple recently released the developer’s preview of the latest version of its PC operating system OSX 10.7, called the OSX Lion. A number of features sported by this new release were highlighted by the company in its developer page; these include the Lion Server which is an option for Recovery HD to replace the need for an installation DVD. The new system allows for wireless sharing of files and documents on devices such as the iPad. Apple has also announced that the new OS X will support full screen apps; these will allow developers to display their apps on a Mac in a similar way as they are displayed on the iPad.
The new revamped interface of the OS, called Aqua, provides the users with new innovative capabilities which include the likes of popovers, improved functionality for multi touch animations, gestures and overlay scrollbars. Popovers are a new content unit which a user can place on the screen relative to the position of other contents. These popovers move automatically with the movement of the positioning view. The overlay scrollbar is a feature similar to the one seen in the iOS, essentially a scrollbar which only appears when scrolling. The multi touch gestures and animations are similar to the fluid and responsive experience of apps that the users get on the iPhone and the iPad.
In addition to this, there will also be a built in feature to auto save applications in Lion which actually saves the changes that are made in the document rather than saving the whole of it. Also, an interface like the one made popular by Time Machine is provided to enable users to track the changes made. The Resume is another new feature which allows the users to come back to applications in the very state they were when last left running, even after logging out or restarting.
