Sony as you know has a strong line up of Playstation 3 exclusive series such as Killzone, LittleBigPlanet and Infamous, recently they have now been critizing platform exclusiveness and has “warned” that it limits the games’ marketing potential.
“When you make a title exclusive, you limit its promotional power; we don’t want to do that,” Sony brand manager Scott McCarthy said. “We want games to be as big as possible — it’s great for the industry. We work very closely with our [third party] publishers, not necessarily to lock down games exclusively, but to lock up exclusive parts of games.”
Sony feels the best way to go about it is release all the same games on every console but then have exclusive DLC. As multiplatform titles with platform exclusive DLC has been on the rise for a while now. The best examples include Xbox 360 exclusive Call of Duty and Fallout DLC as well as PlayStation 3’s exclusive Dante’s Inferno and Dead Space DLC. What do you think of all of this?

the diffrence in the exclusivedlc. sonys are EXCLUSIVE. where MS is timed ::)
sean
I would love to see killzone on Xbox for example. So many times a game gets crushed right out of the box by fanboys and so many ppl miss out on great gaming opportunities. I say that instead of exclusives, strike deals for creators to build games to the strength of the system. If cod can look better on ps3, make it that way. Exclusive dlc or pre order items is fine because what they don’t seem to understand is that it has more to do with where your friends are at. Also, it would push Sony and Microsoft to come up with better and more interesting ways to set themselves apart, and then we all benefit. The danger is that one of the systems becomes obsolete and then sits back, lazily and rakes in the dough while they rake us over the coals.

I disagree…. having exclusives on the consoles is what makes the console different, sure sharing is nice.. But once you get down to it I would not want to see Killzone 3 or any sony exclusive title on the xbox, and the same goes for xbox titles on the Ps3. removing exclusivity from both consoles is something that should be avoided.
Jared
I’ll have to say that this was taken a bit out of context-either that or its just a personal view. Whether it be good or bad, this generation thrives on exclusives. Its pretty much implementing the idea of not ‘putting all your eggs in one basket.’ With the proverbial basket being multiplatform cashcow’s such as ‘COD’ ‘Guitar Hero’ and others. Exclusives break the mold. And as a single console owner, yup.. i own a PS3. I feel like PS3 exclusives suffer due to the lack of promotion and marketing. I own about 16 games, and I think of those…3 are Multiplatform.
dave
Then Sony is fucking themselves into oblivion. You don’t care about FF XIII and GTA being exclusive? Well guess what? Maybe Microsoft does! Next thing you know, the game becomes an Xbox exclusive.
@sean
Killzone will never be on Xbox because Sony owns the studio that develops it (Guerrilla Games). The comments Scott made were about third party IPs like Final Fantasy, Dead Space, Devil May Cry, etc.
Tom Ato
I think it’s fairly obvious that Microsoft DOESN’T care about exclusive games since the 360 hasn’t had an exclusive released for the last 3 years whilst the PS3 seems to have upwards of 20 AAA exclusives released every year.
Also, Final Fantasy XIII bombed on the 360, it sold more than double the amount of copies on PS3 and Versus XIII is a PS3 exclusive, so I don’t think you have a clue what you’re talking about.
The PS3 is an attractive proposition for devs to make exclusive games because it’s a far better machine than the 360. Dev’s see what’s possible using the power of the PS3 in games like GOW 3, Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain and are intrigued by what they could create using the console’s power. The 360, completely underpowered in comparison to the PS3, isn’t an attractive proposition at all and that’s why the PS3 has the most exclusive games released every single year.
Pete
You’re an idiot Tom Ato. The original XBOX offered more than the Playstation 2 but guess what it, it didnt matter did it? This generation there is no incentive to be exclusive for the Playstation 3, it just doesn’t have that marketshare to sustain the development costs when you are neglecting on average 50% of your market.
Sony fanboys need to go back in their cave.
Shawn
Sooo Halo Reach, Gears of War 2, Fable 3 etc went multiplatform? Fail fanboy statement.

Exclusive DLC doesn’t benefit anyone – typically, the console manufacturers are simply paying in order to ensure that the content isn’t developed for the competition, when it would have been otherwise. I say put the money towards making original content that harnesses the power of the console (i.e. exclusives) rather than simply paying so others can’t play.
plmko
I think that was just the brand managers opinion of the paradigm world versus reality.

Dear Sony, make Gran Turismo 5 PC port and i will trust you.
Paul
Can somebody fire Sony brand manager Scott McCarthy? The point of a ‘brand’ is surely its unique selling points. I know that Sony were convinced that this was the Bluray with the PS3 but, no, it actually it is the games. So why would you want to weaken your brand by having lots of multiformat games instead of lots of exclusives?
The only sensible truth is that exclusive games cost too much and that they have to be picky.
If they have any sense, they will be willing to pay to try to make Bioshock Infinite a timed exclusive.
Mike
Personally, I hate exclusive DLCs more than exclusive games. At least with an exclusive game you know you’re getting everything that goes with it. But if you’re playing a game on PS3, and your friend is playing the same game on XBOX only with more cool stuff that you’re not aloud to have because you bought the wrong console. It’s kinda discouraging.
Ieuan
the reason y people want all games to be multi-format is because they dont want to go out and buy 1 of every console i own a ps3 and they are loads of games on the 360 that i want to play but i dont really have the money to get one. i save up for about 3months and i can afford a cheap 2nd hand ps3 game. it will also stop this stupid console war as well. let all games go multi format and that way it stops all the arguments. Also what they should do with online games is share the server so ps3, xbox and pc gamers can join in together
Rob
I think exclusive DLC on multiplatform games is a good idea because it adds personalisation to different consoles but exclusives are also important. If each consoles didn’t have their own hit games what is the point of having different systems at all? in my opinion exclusive titles are what sways customers to the system they choose due to peoples personal preferences.
danny
Well playstation sucks balls. So there.
Chris
I disagree with console exclusivity and eliminating it DOES NOT weaken the brand. In fact it makes those brands stronger by taking games out of the equation and allowing gamers to chose a console based solely on it’s features and how well it can render games. I don’t like buying a console based partially on it’s gaming selection or feeling forced to buy both in order to play certain games. It’s like dividing up the coolest toys in the room and making you decide which kid you’d rather play with based on who has the better toys rather than which kid has the better personality. If you eliminate console exclusivity, everyone from the builder to the gamer wins. At that point you’ve leveled the playing field (instead of dividing it) and put the competition directly in the hands of Sony & Microsoft to see who can one-up each other on making a better console. That’s where the real competition should lie, not between who can secure more exclusive titles and use that as leverage to woo potential customers. All games should be made multi-platform and the exclusivity should come in the form of add-ons, map packs and other downloadable content to make that gaming experience unique to that particular console.

One thing Chris, if they have to develop for multiple consoles, then there can be a lot of development issues. Bayonetta on the PS3 for example is plagued with problems unlike the 360 release, and there is also the issue of the controllers. Hardware isn’t really an issue now, but the OS the system runs on and having to test a full game twice in succession can be quite expensive.
Also, PS3 supports Blu Ray, 360 doesn’t. You might end up with multiple disks which increases production time and testing phases.
Lastly, controllers and hardware, there is a world of difference between a 360 and a PS3 controller. Having to adapt a game to a controller with less buttons can cause a huge amount of headaches.
I do agree that exclusivity is only good for the console itself, but multiplatform is not without its own issues.
ryan
That’s strange to hear from Sony.
The only reason I have a PS3 is LittleBigPlanet, Warhawk, Unreal Tournament mods, Portal 2 w/Steam, and Metal Gear Solid4. They are severely underestimating the value of their “outside the Box” creatives.
someone
i would not want playstaion exsclusive games i play on ps3 on the xbox they cant handle lbp, infamous, ratchet and clank etc ps has a lot of exsclusive games though that shouldnt like socom, or dead nation, etc that the xbox can handle
dont get me wrong im not a ps3 fanboy i like ps bc of ive had all of there systems and its cheaper that xbox because think about it xbox what 129.99 plus 100 dollars for wireless, plus 7 bucks a month, plus controllers within a couple of months you payed more for your xbox
