Is Blu-ray going to be a thing of the past already? Maybe ,maybe not. Today Sony and Tohoku University announced that they have developed a new laser technology, that will able to fit 25 times the data that a Blu-ray disc can. A standard Blu-ray disc can hold up to 50GBs of memory on it, for all you people who don’t want to do the math this means the new disc format can hold 1TB… that’s a lot of cheese.
This new laser technology is a beast; it generates a high-powered optical pulsing speed of 3 picoseconds (three trillionths of a second) in a wavelength of 405 nanometers. In other words it can encode faster and use less space on the physical size of the disc, so it can fit more memory. This is Sony’s plan as a successor to the Blu-ray. But don’t think Sony will be phasing it out just yet, we probably won’t be seeing these disc’s for a while. But to us gamers, this could mean better graphics, longer games and more complex gameplay.

Oh WOW!, 1TB of memory for a game, this could quite possibly be the most awesome thing i ever heard, except for fable 3 LCE but i am a huge fable fan! In a gaming perspective i doubt they will put this out until the PS4 or something but it might cause real problems for game developers if they release on both systems!
Anyway this could be fantastic for the 3D gaming the Sony is creating atm, and it might even destroy Xbox which i like but despise for it’s users… I own both so i’m not a hypocrite, I do love the Xbox dashboard though!
Anyway awesome news can’t wait to see it in affect

I assume this new prototype is almost impossible to code for, hence multi-console games would still look better on the 360 while PS3 exclusives would destroy but with small numbers of games.
